Tip: Make asking for favors easier.

One of the reasons we build networks is so that we can support each other, but mentally it is a big leap to ask someone for a favor. Joe McCormack, who runs The Brief Lab offers these three barriers:

1. Fear of rejection

2. Not wanting to be a bother

3. Not having ever done the other person a favor first

For most of us, these are most definitely hurdles to asking for a favor. But what is the worst thing that can happen? They might say no, and you can graciously exit the ask, “I totally understand, I just thought you might have access to that information (that person, etc.)” If it is still a leap for you, consider doing your personal prep work.

McCormack says, “Start thinking of people around you and some of the needs they may be reluctant to reveal. Instead of waiting, go up to them and simply say, ‘Is there anything you might need from me right now?’ Don’t be surprised to hear them say yes.”

The more often you ask others the more confident you will be to ask a favor. It is a little mind game you can employ—so much better than fearing rejection or not wanting to be a bother.

Practice doing this! End more conversations this way: “Is there anything I can do for you?” Doing more favors makes asking much easier. Consider it exercising your favor muscle.
