Tip: How many people do you REALLY know at work?
An immediate answer might be fairly easy. It’s the people on your team, those who work in close proximity, and who you go for drinks with after work.
But upon reflection, when you consider the number of people in your company, how many of those people:
● do you know what they do?
● can you say hello to by name?
● do you have a good level of rapport?
Most likely there are opportunities to build more relationships inside your company―in the building where you work, in various geographic locations, and with those who work remotely.
To do this it takes commitment. We know a young professional who sets a goal of meeting one new person a week at her large environmental firm. It’s in her calendar and she reaches out to them either in person, or online. She doesn’t ignore those who are working remotely.
Does this all seem outside your comfort zone?
Here are three tips on how to do it:
1. Keep it simple: “I’d like to introduce myself…"
2. Be curious: Be the kind of person who wants to know more about what they do, and share your info with them.
3. Add value: Welcome them into your work network. Think about what you can do for them, or who you could introduce them to amongst your friends and colleagues at work.
Why do it when you are already busy?
Building your work network raises your profile in the company, gives you access to new information, builds bonds up and down the organization.
And what if you work for a smaller company? Ask yourself: can you build stronger bonds than you presently have with your colleagues?
