Tip: Take 10 seconds to diffuse a conversation.

Jason Aten’s Inc. article How Emotionally Intelligent Leaders Embrace the 10-Second Rule to Handle Difficult Situations, explains how, when a conversation is going off-track, you stop and wait 10 seconds before continuing. Here is the logic:

“There are several reasons this works. First, it allows you to take a breath and think through your response before you contribute any more fuel to an otherwise heated conversation. Taking a deep breath can actually help lower cortisol, the hormone that contributes to your stress reaction.

It also gives you a moment to consider the person on the other side of the conversation and process whatever it is they just said. After all, even if they said something that upsets you, you still have a choice in how to respond. Give yourself 10 seconds to figure that out before things get even worse.”

It may seem like the longest 10 seconds of your life, but count the seconds out right now and you can see that it is doable.

You have put a lot of time into building your relationships (business and personal) so a 10-second reset button is worth pushing.
