Sites of Interest
The Historic Pottstown Walking Tour is a self-guided excursion
consisting of a series of interpretive displays located at 22 historic sites in the Borough of Pottstown. Through the use of text, vintage photographs, drawings and other graphic elements, these exhibits document the events and changes that have occurred over the years at these historic locations and, in total, serve as a marvelous introduction to Pottstown’s rich heritage. The tour includes the oldest structure in the Borough, Pottsgrove Manor, built in 1752 and 1753 by Ironmaster John Potts, the founder of Pottstown. The Manor now functions as a museum with tours and programs being offered on a regular basis.
The Architectural Legacy of Historic Pottstown Tour is a self-guided walking journey designed to introduce visitors and residents to Pottstown’s rich architectural heritage. As one would expect in a town more than 250 years old, a wide range of architectural styles are represented in its residential, commercial and ecclesiastical structures. For the purpose of this tour, the periods represented range from the Georgian to the Bungalow Style.
The Historic Advertising Murals of Downtown Pottstown Tour is a self-guided
walking tour designed to introduce visitors and residents to Pottstown’s rich business heritage. One step in the evolution of business advertising can be seen through the artistic creation of these advertising murals. These murals have been restored to their original form and color and can be conveniently viewed while strolling down the sidewalks of downtown Pottstown.
All three of the featured walking tours are free of charge and conveniently printed in brochure form. They are available in the ground floor lobby of 152 E. High Street in Pottstown, home of the Chamber's offices.
Carousel
The Carousel at Pottstown, created as a catalyst for the revitalization of Pottstown's downtown area through the establishment of a historic, nonprofit, and financially self-sustaining carousel, will host a variety of community functions. The carousel is located at 30 West King Street in Pottstown, and the groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 3, 2009. In
addition to the Derek Scott Saylor Memorial Carousel, the facility will include a kitchen to host caterers, an arcade, and a snack bar. The facility will also be available for weddings, art shows, business meetings, and large events. The Carousel organization intends to duplicate the success of carousels around the country that have been used similarly to revitalize downtown areas. When completed, the carousel will be one of less than 150 all-wood grand carousels in North America and will hold 50 new and antique carved, solid wood figures recreated by local students, artists, and artisans. Currently, the Carousel organization sponsors annual events such as their Carousel of Flavor to raise money for the project.
